What is Occasional Childcare, exactly?

An Occasional Childcare facility is attended by a child for no more than 40 hours per month.  At Blackbird Academy, members may attend anywhere from 0 to 40 hours each month, with as much variation as is convenient for the family.  Each family pays a membership fee of $50 per month for any month in which their child attends.   Childcare is $16/hour and parents book the hours they’d like using our online booking and payment system.


What ages of children does Blackbird serve?

Children aged 18 months to 6 years are welcome at Blackbird.  We’re pleased to provide a range of fantastic, fun, and educational activities suited to the diverse developmental stages and interests of learners in this age group.


When is Blackbird open?

We’re open from 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday to Friday, and 9:00am to 1:00pm Saturday.


Is Blackbird Academy Licensed and Insured?

Yes, we’re a Licensed Childcare provider by Vancouver Coastal Health.  We’re also fully insured.


Does my child need to be toilet trained to attend?

No, we are happy to help with diaper changes, potty reminders, etc.!  Please send diapers, wipes, and a change of clothes every time.


Does Blackbird provide snacks?

No, please send a peanut-free snack with your child every time he or she attends.   We typically have snack at 10:30am and 2:30pm, and lunch at noon.


Do you offer any discounts?

Yes!  Discount packages are periodically available on our Booking Calendar page.

Care for multiple siblings attending at once is reduced by a 10% discount.

We also offer large discounts when providing care to siblings of children undergoing treatment at BC Children’s Hospital. 


What sort of curriculum is offered at Blackbird Academy?

We’re pleased to offer an engaging Activity-Based Curriculum that builds on the strengths and interests of participating children.  We’re committed to keeping our learning environment fresh; there are new activities every single day to ensure children are challenged and engaged.  Activities are always developmentally appropriate and thoughtfully planned.


Can I Cancel pre-booked Blackbird Time?

To cancel any Blackbird Time you have booked, please send a cancellation email to You will receive credit for that time if you email 24 hours or more in advance of that time (no exceptions).  You can also change your appointment times on your own via our booking calendar, as long as it is more than 24 hours before the appointment time.
